The Deck Band... Rockin' and Bloggin' South Jersey one party at at time!
Entry for August 22, 2007

The Deck Band returned to the practice studio on Wednesday night (8/22) after nearly a two-week break, and seemed to be firing on all cylinders.  The band was able to get through sets one and two for the upcoming return visit to Ott’s Tavern on the Green, slated for Friday night, September 7th at 9:00.

Speaking of set lists, we’ve come to realize they are a very fluid instrument.  Most of the gigs we have played over the past year, we have yet to play an entire set list verbatim, often calling audibles, nixing songs, or expanding others.  Is that wrong?

So far, the changes off the set list have all worked out well, and a system of changing to a different song of the fly has been developed.  One thing we’ve noticed is that by the final set of any act, we seem to play less then scheduled.  For our next gig, we’ve actually designed the final (4th) set at six songs.  If things are going really well, we can go into our bag of tricks and add a few.  By that late in the evening, most people are too hammered to tell, so it’s a ‘win-win’.

For those avid readers of The Deck Blog, here’s the current plan for the night at Ott’s.

Set One:  Fall Down, Jet Airliner, Vertigo, Lady, Low, The Middle, Mrs. Robinson, Inside Out, Don't Fear The Reaper, Message in a Bottle.

Set Two (begins acoustic):  One, The Rising, Behind Blue Eyes, Kryptonite, What I Got, Brown Eyed Girl, Learning To Fly, Hard Days Night, Johnny Be Good, Keep On Rockin.

Set Three:  Who Says You Can't Go Home, Two Tickets to Paradise, The Breakup Song, Little Miss, Beverly Hills/Louie Louie, Hey Girl (pending), White Wedding, Brown Sugar, Jenny, Saw Her Standing There.

Set Four:  Come as You Are, Steady as She Goes, Boys Are Back In Town, Come and Play, Time of Season, Higher Ground.

Lots of these we have yet to play in public, so the band is pretty fired up to see how they come out.  Speaking of, we hope to see a big turnout for our next ‘rolling party’ at Ott’s!

Band Notes:  Whitey won the Tuesday evening methane award.  He was the only participant.  Kev practiced without shades, and seemed well rested.  Afterwards he headed back to the shore for more of this week’s wonderful vacation weather…  TC had a good night, and displayed some nice keyboard skills on the new Yamaha donated by Tweed Farm’s departing Dang family…  JR said he hadn’t played in nearly two weeks, but was sharp on the axe, and also wore a nice 46L jacket.  He left his giant coffee table book at home however.
