Mid October Deck Band Report

Will our next Saturday at Trio’s Tavern be the end of the Deck Band?  Well, yes and no.  How about a solid maybe!

The truth of the matter is, this economy is killing us.  TC, our lead singer works for Fanny Mae, and in case you haven’t heard there’s been a lot going on there since the summer began.  TC has been traveling every week to either Columbus, Ohio or Dallas, Texas, or someplace in-between.  He usually flies out Sunday night, and gets home late on Thursdays.  For band practice purposes those days are out.

JR on the other hand is back to running the Eagles Radio Network on 94 WYSP.  The weekends for him are busy with family and work.  The big question is, can we practice once a week together?  The answer in a nutshell is no.

So here’s the “you only heard it here deal”.  The band, or at least three-fourths of the band (communicating with JR anyway other than face to face isn’t really his bag, baby) doesn’t feel right playing out during this period publicly if we can’t bring our ‘A’ game.  If someone is going to pay us to play, they deserve the best we can give them.  So in essence, we’ve stopped LOOKING for paying gigs until either…

The Eagles season is over, giving JR twice the weekend family time.

And/or

TC’s job travel load eases up.

There were a few choices kicked around leading up to this.  One of them was to take a two month hiatus from playing together.  Another was to actually double the practice load for Murph and Whitey.  As of this writing, the latter is going to get a shot.

Once a week JR, Whitey, and Murph will practice during a weeknight.  On Saturday mornings, TC, Whitey, and Murph will practice as well.  This way we keep moving forward (or at least don’t loose too much ground), and perhaps use the time to do some more recording, which had started this summer and then was shelved due to lots of fun gigs.

Some songs we are going to check out in the near future include Are You Gonna Be My Girl (Jet), You Really Got Me (Kinks), Friday I’m in Love (Cure), Shakin’ (Eddie Money), and Private Idaho (B-52’s).  These were the last five we chose, and will pretty much be rolled out in that order.

So there you have it.  Wanna check out the band perhaps for the last time of 2008, join us at Trio’s Tavern Saturday October 18 at 9:00.  We are planning on leaving it all on the dance floor, and hope you will do the same as well!  Special playing by Ken Denneny on bass guitar for 3-4 tunes too.
